The Friends of Ham Hill and Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering Opportunities

To manage Ham Hill effectively we need the valuable assistance and support of practical conservation volunteers to help with a variety of tasks. No formal qualifications or experience are needed; all that is required are enthusiasm, some old clothes, a sense of humour, and a willingness to help conserve your local wildlife and heritage.

Our practical conservation volunteer day is every Wednesday; by focusing on one day we can ensure that volunteers will be working in a team. This is not only a benefit from a safety point of view, but it means that we can tackle larger tasks.

Work arrangements for volunteers are very flexible depending on you, and how you would like to be involved with the team. Anyone is welcome to join us and for as often as they like, whether it's all day or just an hour. As well as practical volunteering, there are several other volunteering opportunities available, such as helping us to surveying monitoring the wildlife and visitors in the Country Park, leading guided walks and talks and helping with our busy events programme and education sessions.

"The first mention of volunteering at Ham Hill Country Park came during an interesting talk by the Rangers at Yeovil and District Natural History Society. With retirement looming, volunteering seemed a good way to be able to contribute something to the maintenance of the Country Park and enjoy the fresh air, all at the same time."

"The work over the years has been very varied, from replacing footpath signs, laying water pipes, clearing scrub, pulling up ragwort, building steps, herding sheep and litter picking. I can recommend the Wednesday work day for its good social atmosphere. The Rangers are good to work with and have made me feel very welcome. Why not come and join us?" John Day, regular volunteer.

If you would like more information on the Ham Hill Volunteer team please contact the Ranger's Office on 01935 823617 or email the Ham Hill team

The Countryside Ranger team also run volunteer days on a Thursday at Yeovil Country Park and on a Friday at Chard Reservoir Local Nature Reserve. Please contact the Ham Hill Office as above to find out more about volunteering at these sites too. You can download the volunteer registration form here, which you can fill in and take to any site that you wish to volunteer at, in order to register with the countryside volunteer ranger team.

The Friends of Ham Hill

Ham Hill Country Park has a well established and extremely valuable 'Friends' group that support the work of the Rangers by working to conserve, improve, and celebrate Ham Hill Country Park. Every year the Friends assist the Ranger team in organising and running the Ham Hill Fayre - an exciting event that thousands of people attend. They also help to raise funds for the Country Park which fund various things such as part funding a casual seasonal ranger post and buying equipment for educational activities such as bug hunting nets and trays. If you are interested in joining the Friends of Ham Hill group please contact the Ranger's Office on 01935 823617 or email the Ham Hill team
