Education and activities for all ages

Ham Hill Country Park is a fantastic site for both formal and informal visits for all groups - from schools and colleges to out of school clubs, community groups young and old, and all sorts of clubs and societies.

There is a comprehensive Education Pack for Ham Hill Country Park which is ideal for teachers and community group leaders looking for interesting and enjoyable activities to engage their pupils/young people. The pack contains full instructions on how to run each activity, curriculum links, learning outcomes, worksheets, extra resources and more!! Activities include orienteering, history tours, hamstone studies, plants and habitats, arts and craft and ideas for exploratory games. If you would like to request a hard copy of this pack in the post please email the Ham Hill team making sure you leave your full name, address and postcode.

For Schools & Colleges

From 2007-2009 we were able to provide ranger-led sessions due to the appointment of a full time Education Officer. However we do not currently have funding for someone to provide education sessions for 2010 - we are hoping that this will be put in place for 2011 onwards, but we can provide:

  • A comprehensive Education Pack
  • Hire of the Ham Hill Education Centre
  • Equipment hire such as quadrats, magni-jars and sweep nets
  • Books, ID guides and other resources
  • Work experience opportunities

For higher level students we can offer a range of resources such as management plans, visitor surveys and artefacts to enable you to complete independent research projects.

For more information or to arrange an appointment at the Ham Hill Centre to look at Ham Hill documents/artefacts, to chat to a member of the ranger team please contact the Ham Hill Ranger's Office on 01935 823617 or email the Ham Hill team.

For Families and children

The Ham Hill and Yeovil Country Park rangers run a junior "Look Out Club" for children aged 8-12 once every two months on a Saturday, which is a morning of fun activities just for children (younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult). The activities are designed to promote an interest in wildlife, history and the great outdoors.

We do all sorts of activities such as making bird boxes and feeders, bug hunting, pond dipping, willow weaving, hands on history sessions and usually one 'away' trip a year such as kayaking or visiting wildlife sanctuaries.

There is a small charge to participate to help cover our costs. For more information on the Look Out Club or to be added to the mailing list, please phone 01935 462282, or email the Ham Hill team. If you would like to join the Look Out Club, simply download the Look Out Club registration form and send it into the SSDC offices at Brympton Way.

For Everybody

In previous years we have been able to provide formal and informal learning opportunities for all groups of all descriptions; from parent & toddler groups and out of school clubs to groups with disabilities, special interest societies and also corporate team building days. However, we have not managed to secure funding for an Education Officer post for 2010, and are hoping to be able to provide the following from 2011 onwards if we are able secure funding:

  • Tailor made activities, talks and slide shows to suit your groups needs
  • Books, ID guides and other resources
  • We can come to you for the above or we can help organise transport to Ham Hill
  • Guided walks (assisted if necessary)
  • A range of volunteering opportunities
