The Leland Trail

The Leland Trail is a 28 mile regional footpath route through South Somerset, from Alfred's Tower to Ham Hill in seven stages.

The route uses definitive rights of way, tracks and lanes, following in the footsteps of John Leland who travelled through South Somerset at some time during the period 1535 - 1543.

The Leland Trail walked over a number of days, stopping off to enjoy our lovely towns and villages or broken down into smaller walks as follows:

  1. Penselwood to Bruton
    Approx 4.8 miles - 3 hours
  2. Bruton to Castle Cary
    Approx 4 miles - 2.5 hours
  3. Castle Cary to North Cadbury
    Approx 4 miles - 2.5 hours
  4. North Cadbury to Queen Camel
    Approx 4.8 miles - 2.5 hours
  5. Queen Camel to Ilchester
    Approx 4.8 miles - 2.25 hours
  6. Ilchester to Montacute
    Approx 4 miles - 2.5 hours
  7. Montacute to Ham Hill
    Approx 1.5 miles - 1 hour
